obama will be campaigning in the heartland today. romney will be visiting iowa. it will be the gop nominee easily seventh trip to iowa since finishing second in that state's caucuses in january. romney will visit ohio where the president will be this afternoon. mr. obama will be at ohio state university in columbus. he has campaigned on more than 30 college campuses this year. the first lady campaigning for the president today here in northern virginia. michelle obama will speak to supporters at the loudoun county fairgrounds in leesburg this evening. virginia has been a common stop for both candidates and their spouses. mitt romney and his wife ann were making multiple campaign stops in virginia yesterday. the first lady's event opens to the public at 2:45 this afternoon. people who live in the district today is the last day you can register to vote by mail. applications are available online and at public libraries, firehouses and police stations. anyone who misses today's deadline can still register to vote during early voting and on

the election at their polling place. the election is tuesday, november 6th. the top american counterterrorism adviser heads to libya today. john brennan will yet get an update on the investigation into the attack on the u.s. consulate in benghazi last month. ambassador chris stevens and three other americans were killed. brenn brennan's trip comes a day before congress holds its first hearing on the attack. a state department official will be among the witnesses to testify before the house oversight committee. he is expected to deny reports the state department ignored requests for additional security in libya in the weeks and months before the attacks. police are still trying to figure out how a missing fairfax teenager died. brian glenn disappeared last week after dropping his brother off at wt woodson high school. his body was found yesterday in a park. bryan's family issued a statement saying the controversy was "a great shock" and they need to let the investigation into bryan's death run its course. sources tell news 4 police do not believe his death is suspicious.

montgomery county police are trying to solve a shooting that left one man in critical condition. police say a homeowner got into an argument with a man and a woman in the 1100 block of good hope drive in silver spring last night. during the fight the homeowner shot the man who then drove himself to the hospital. the homeowner was also hurt in the fight. he is expected to be okay. montgomery county police are also trying to solve the mystery of a clarksbergman who died while in police custody. yesterday afternoon office arrested 39-year-old nathan jones who was reportedly being violent and erratic. he resisted arrest but officers finally got him under control with pepper spray. a short time later, jones started to lose consciousness and was pronounced dead at a nearby. >> 6:06. the nationals are coming back home tied one game apiece against the cardinals. game two was a rough one for nats' pitchers. cards crushed the nats 12-4. after the game the team was ready to get on a plane and be

in just a few hours, sandusky will be sentenced for abusing ten boys over a 15-year period. sandusky as well as some of the victims are expected to speak at that hearing. danielle lee joins us from the centre county courthouse with more on what we can expect. >> reporter: good morning. you may be able to see just over my right shoulder people are already lining up outside of this courthouse waiting for this hearing that is set to begin in a couple hours. it will likely be the second time in less than 24 hours that we heard from jerry sandusky after he was largely silent during the entire trial. you may remember that jerry sandusky did not testify. one of the only times we heard from him prior to his conviction was during that infamous nbc interview that didn't go well. so this last-minute statement out of his jail cell is very unheard of and in very many ways many telling. equally telling what he didn't y. he offered no apologies, only maintained his innocence.

charges, including inciting a riot. police ticketed two other people for disorderly conduct. more people could be arrested. an uncle of one of the brides died from a heart attack. check out this hoarding situation in las vegas. police say it's the worst case of hoarding they have ever seen. police found seven dead cats in the home that was full of material stacked from floor to ceiling. 19 sick cats had to be put down. authorities had to remove the front door just to get inside and clean the place. the home has been declared unin habitable. the mars curiosity rover continues to show it has a sense of humor. it recently sent back a photo showing it surveying an object in the sand. someone commented, oh, no, i dropped my keys. the rover is testing the item to find out what it is. members of the curiosity team back here on earth believe it's

a piece of plastic that maybe fell off the rover. well, despite one of its engines falterin the spacex dragon is still on course for the international space station. the first-ever commercial space cargo mission launched sunday night. one of the rocket's nine engines lost pressure shortly after takeoff. they made adjustments to allow it to make it to the space station. it is scheduled to arrive on wednesday. the redskins team doctor and a neurologist will evaluate robert griffin thriii again tod. he could participate in a cardio workout if he doesn't show any ill effects, he could be back on the practice field tomorrow. head coach mike shanahan is confident rg3 will be able to play next sunday against the vikings. it is time that time of the year again, basketball season is

it so your going to need a warm jacket or a light coat this morning heading out. i've got an occasional drop that's still coming down right here northwest d.c. but there are some showers out there too showing up on radar. temperatures, take a look at them, they're higher by 3 to 5 degrees compared to where we were yesterday. capital heights at 46 degrees, good morning to you. burke and chantilly, you're coming in at 45 and damascus, maryland, here at 45 degrees. here's a look at the showers. you can see them a little heavier north of baltimore, around calvert, st. mary's county but all this coming to an end soon. i think by around 8:00 those showers will be moving out so at the bus stop this morning, 45 to 49 degrees with just overcast skies. not too bad there. i'll be back in about ten minutes with your four-day forecast. well, looking at delays in the first 4 traffic report. let's start as you're making your commute in maryland traveling southbound.

seeing an impact to mark service north of baltimore as well. as for amtrak, the 448 acela express to boston as cancelled, the 5:30 northeast regional was cancelled also the express to new york. that gate is listed as closed. we have the 6:30 regional to newark cancelled so we're seeing big delays, big cancellations and inconveniences to travelers headed on amtrak points north from union station this morning. we did speak to a commuter who had a 9:30 meeting in new york city. he looked up at the board here and saw his train was not going to be leaving and so he's scrambling to try to figure out another way to get to that meeting this morning. mark train also points north of baltimore impacted. they have crews working on the situation. we'll update you later on in the show. megan mcgrath, news 4. back to you. controversial ads supporting israel now on display in some metro stations. yesterday the transit agency put up the ads which are paid for by

the american freedom defense initiative. they compare muslim extremists to savages. metro resisted displaying those posters because it was concerned they could trigger a violent backlash. a judge ruled the ads must go up or metro would violate the aidi's first amendment rights. >> i will not sacrifice my freedom of speech. it's a ridiculous premise and utterly unamerican. >> the atmosphere ads are also in new york city subway stations. another death is linked to the meningitis outbreak. the centers for disease control says at least 105 people have been sickened by the rare fungal infection. the death toll stands at nine. two of those were in maryland and virginia. health officials link the outbreak to steroid shots used for back pain. the cdc expects the number of people to continue to rise. >> the incubation is rather long, up to a month, so we

expect new cases to be discovered around the country for the next several weeks, i'm afraid. >> symptoms include fever, severe headache, stiff neck, nausea and the inability to maintain balance. this form of meningitis is not contagious. pepco and its union workers reached a tentative agreement on a new four-year contract avoiding a strike. the union's full membership still has to vote on that, neither side providing details on the new deal but the union president is recommending members approve it. a hotel and hundreds of apartments and shops coming to downtown rockville. montgomery county officials announced a $4 million grant for the project. the 14 story building will go up on a parking lot on the former site of the rockville mall. it will house a cambria suites hotel. the county and developer still have to replace the parking slots before the project can move forward. the project is expected to take two years to complete. now to the race for virginia's u.s. senate seat.

right now democrat tim kaine holds a slight lead over republican george allen in recent polls in one of the most closely watched races in election year. the candidates were in richmond last night for a live, televised debate. both men say they are the right pick for breaking the partisan gridlock in washington. >> we have to have bridge builders. when george was in the senate, he ridiculed john warner's efforts and the gang of 14 to compromise, saying we don't need to compromise. i think we need people in the senate that know how to compromise and that will move the economy forward. >> i've worked with people on both sides of the aisle as governor as well as senate with everything from internet access to screening of newborn babies and nanotechnology. >> the candidates' final debate will take place next week at virginia tech. should race be a factor in college admissions? a supreme court will take up that issue this week. tomorrow the nine justices will hear the case of abigail fisher who says she was denied

during the fight the homeowner shot the man who drove himself to the hospital. the homer owner was also hurt but is expected to be okay. alcohol may have played a role in a police-involved shooting outside a silver spring house. montgomery county police say the 22-year-old man showed up at a house where his girlfriend was working as a nanny. they say he called police and when they got there, he would not put down a gun and they shot him. the gun turned out to be a fake. neighbors got a call from police during that incident warning them to stay inside their homes. montgomery county police also trying to solve a mystery of a clarksburg man who died while in police custody. yesterday afternoon officers arrested 39-year-old nathan jones who was reportedly being violent and erratic. police had to use pepper spray to arrest him. a short time later jones started to lose consciousness and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital. today kwame brown will be in court for an apparent violation of his plea agreement.

he pled guilt back in june to bank fraud and campaign finance violations. he is required to be truthful with authorities and disclose his personal finances. the u.s. attorney's office is not commenting on the reason for the hearing. brown still faces up to a year in prison. american airlines ceo makes an admission his company messed up. cnbc's courtney reagan has that. courtney, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. the ceo of american airlines is acknowledging it's been a rough few weeks for passengers but he said the carrier is working through its issues. american, which is currently in bankruptcy, saw its on-time performance drop to 59% last month. rivals like delta, sweflt and u.s. airways were all above 85%. the airline has blamed delays on pilots filling out maintenance requests amid a contract dispute. last week seats came loose on three separate flights. with a month to go before we head to the polls several companies are rolling out election-themed pr stunts.

as we move through the day today. here's a look at what's left on radar. you can see those showers really breaking up down to the south, just a few little light sprinkles left around quantico, around fredericksburg and up around waldorf up to the north i-95. so here it is, your future weather. at 9:00 a.m. today, a partly cloudy sky west, more clouds off to the east and then we're going to be in and out of the cloud cover today. so by afternoon mixture of clouds and sunshine. but about 5 degrees higher than we were yesterday. we'll get up to 60 degrees. now, that's still below average for us and still feeling a lot like november. what happens on wednesday is that ahead of the next weather front we'll get a chance to warm up and as we do, we'll hit a high temperature of 70 degrees. i don't think we're going to have any rain either with that front when icomes through so a dry front. that's going to allow our temperatures to go up and down over the next couple of days. it's up for wednesday and then it's back down for the remainder of the week and the weekend.

and again, those delays continue all the way to new york avenue. april, over to you. just in, an update on breaking news. the power outage causing big delays on amtrak. megan mcgrath is live with more. >> reporter: good morning, aaron. we just found out a little bit more about the power situation that's causing all of these problems. apparently they have downed power lines south of aberdeen and the biggest impact we're seeing is with amtrak service to points north. so folks here from union station who are headed to new york city and boston, we've seen a number of cancellations this morning. the 6:30 northeast regional to newark was cancelled. the 7:00 a.m. acela express to boston is cancelled. we've also seen the acela to new york city, the express, that cancelled this morning as well. should also mention for mark train folks, if you're going to points north of baltimore, aberdeen, perryville, those locations, we are seeing an impact there as well. again, lines down south of aberdeen.
